  • I am immune to mental illness, so it cannot affect me.

    No one is immune to mental illness. All of us can be affected by mental illness. Studies have proved that at any given time, 1 out of 5 Indians is suffering from mental health problem.

  • Children are not vulnerable to mental health problems.

    You will be surprised to know that 50% of mental health disorders show first signs before a person turns 14 years & 5% of mental health problems begin before age of 24. Unfortunately, only less than 20% of children & adolescents are diagnosed & receive treatment they need. And remaining never seek Psychiatric assessment and treatment.

  • People with mental disorders are dangerous & violent.

    The fact is vice-versa, living with a mental condition makes you more likely to be a victim of violence, 4 times the rate of general public. The vast majority of people with mental health problems are not violent. You meet someone with a mental illness & don’t even realise it as many people with mental problems are highly active & productive members of our society.

  • People with mental illness cannot attend the school or manage work at jobs.

    Like diabetes / HT / chronic physical condition people with mental illness are likely to miss      the workdays or school days. The bias which people with mental illness face is that they are not hired for job because of the stigma towards mental illness. The resulting unemployment leaves them rejected, isolated & adds on their stress & make it more difficult to respond to treatment. People benefit from finding a meaningful employment & support of their employer.

  • Personal weakness is the cause of mental illness.

    Mental illness has nothing to do with personal weakness. Many factors partly or fully contribute to mental health problems including biological or genetic, physical illness, head injury, neglect or abuse, family history of mental health problems, loss of loved one or job.

  • People don’t recover from mental illness & suffer lifelong.

    People can and Do recover from mental illness sooner or later & are able to live, work & contribute their skills and abilities to their communities. In current times there are more sophisticated resources available for treatment services and community support than ever before. If a patient continues to experience many challenges in treatment it may be the sign that different approach or support is needed. If treated appropriately & early in the disease process, many people recover fully & have no relapse. Few mental illnesses may require long term management.

  • Psychotherapy is waste of time. Why to worry when u can take pills.

    Treatment for mental illness depends upon individual & it could be medication, psychotherapy or both. Everyone has different treatment needs. A lot of people work with psychiatrist, counsellor, therapist & social workers in their recovery process. They also use self-help strategies e.g.: positive thoughts, religion & spirituality & communities support can contribute therapy but it cannot be the absolute best.

  • I cannot do anything for someone with mental health problems

    You can do a lot. You can nurture an environment which promotes positive mental health.

    For example :

    • Learn as much as possible about the mental health condition of your loved ones through genuine online sources.
    • Be compassionate & empathetic to patient.
    • Maintain patients self-respect & letting them know “You Care.”
    • Keep away from myths & learn & share facts about mental health problems.
    • Help them to access mental health services & take interest in his treatment plan.
    • Don’t stigmatize or discriminate them when it comes to employment or education.
    • Avoid labelling people with words like “Insane”, “Crazy“, “Maniac”.
  • Mental illnesses are not real medical illness.

    No, mental illness is a disease as Cancer, Diabetes, Hypertension or heart disease. Mental illness doesn’t go away on their own & requires effective treatment. When someone suffers cancer, we would not except them to just get over it without chemotherapy or surgery or other help in their daily life while they recovered.

  • People choose to have mental illness to seek attention.

    Mental illness is never a matter of choice. Attention seeking / misbehaviour in children or adults can be symptoms of mental disorder. Research has proved that mental disorders are real like Diabetes or Hypertension. People with mental illness may act or behave in ways that seem strange to others. It is the illness & not the person who misbehaves.

  • Bad parenting causes mental illness

    Any one single factor cannot cause mental illness. Mental health condition is not simply a side effect of parenting but combination of biological, genetic, environment & life experiences.

  • Depression can go away by cheering up.

    Depression is mental illness and it is not mere sadness which can go away with cheer up or shake it off. Depression affects biological functions of our body & psychotherapy or medication can help address the depression.

  • People with mental illness have less IQ.

    Overall the level of intelligence among the people with mental illness is parallel with any general population. Rather few people with mental disorders are brilliant, creative & productive people. People with mental illness have changes in ones thinking, mood & behaviour. A person with Mental Retardation (MR) have limited IQ.

  • Shock therapy as shown in Bollywood movies is barbaric.

    Shock therapy is layman word. It means Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). ECT has proved to be one of the most effective treatment for severe depression in cases when medications alone is not effective.

  • People are born with mental illness

    Some of the mental disorders like Bipolar mood disorder are genetically inherited that run into families but most of mental illnesses are due to combination of factors that  are acquired during lifetime e.g. stress, bereavement, loss of job, break ups, unemployment, Substance, physical and sexual abuse etc.

  • The brain gets affected by psychometric test.

    No, brain is not affected by psychological and psychometric tests rather it helps to diagnosis & treat mental illness.

  • Alcohol

  • Alcohol helps you sleep

    Alcohol consumption in small quantity may acts as a stimulant but if taken in larger quantities it acts as a depressant, seductive or addictive drug. Infact Alcohol consumption disturbs Sleep cycle.

  • Alcohol has the same effect on everyone

    No, Alcohol like every other food we consume, affect differently in different people. There can be many factors that may affect a person’s reaction to alcohol  like body weight, metabolism, gender & various genetic factors.

  • Alcohol can help alleviate pain

    One needs heavy dose of alcohol to numb pain successfully, which will increase the quantity of consumption and during next episode of pain you need even higher dose of alcohol, which develops dependence on alcohol, which leads to withdrawal symptoms making you more sensitive to pain.

  • Addicts can stop simply by choosing to change their behaviour

    An addict develops dependence on substance so his body requires substance to feel normal. If he attempts to stop or reduce the use of substance, he will experience varied level of physical & mental distress for a period. This is known as withdrawal syndrome & it even can be Life threatening depending upon substance abuse. The Psychiatric treatment helps to deal and treat in an effective way.

  • Addicts or typical sterotype persons eg unemployed male & homeless.

    The truth is that people addicted to substances exist in every walk of life regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, employment or economic status. Addiction is a condition that impacts everyone. It can happen to you, your loved one, your family, neighbour, friends.

  • Addiction is the result of moral weakness

    Its common notion to assume that addicted individual lack the will power or morale to overcome drug or alcohol abuse. In fact Addiction has roots in genetic susceptibility, social circumstances, environment factors & personality factors.

  • Prescription drugs are not as addictive as illcit drugs

    According to National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), prescription drugs can be just as dangerous & addictive as illicit drugs. Many prescribed medicines eg opioids, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, etc are highly potent & have the potential for abuse & addiction.

  • Residential Rehab is not effective for addicts

    Rehab is one of the highly effective mode of treatment. Addiction is a long-term condition and during the treatment course, there are Recovery & Relapses too. Still, it is possible for people to continue drug use following treatment, just as it is possible for people to with Diabetes or Hypertension to struggle to maintain their blood sugar & blood pressure. Rehab is a learning a lifestyle. Its where you gain skills you need to combat cravings & where you get a taste of what your life could look like without addiction.

  • If I relapse, there is no hope for me at all.

    Relapse is a part of overall Treatment Plan. If someone relapse, don’t loose hope. Discuss with your Psychiatrist and get back in the game.

  • Detoxification by the use of medicines replaces one addiction for another.

    Pharmacotherapy means to use medicines or drugs to combat addiction which is the most scientific mode of treatment. The medicines used for Detoxification are FDA approved for specific uses. These medicines work by helping patients control their physical and psychological craving for any addicting drugs. These FDA approved drugs are not built to give you a high and are safe to use under doctors supervision.
